Business Development Manager

The Business Development Manager will drive the process to help the company achieve targeted and strategic growth in sales of trucking and transportation services. The Business Development Manager would be expected to actively create and maintain a sales pipeline, establish new customers for the company and maintain strong relationships with current customers. The position requires general administration work directly related to the key duties of the job.


This position is under the direct supervision of the company President and does not provide supervision to others. The position is key to the operations of the company.


A 30 to 40-hour work week with flexible hours available. Travel to meet with customers and attend conferences would be by car or commercial airline.

Primary Job Duties:

  • Proactively identify potential clients in the target market to grow the business and exceed quarterly and yearly sales targets and margins on a regular basis.

  • Make sales calls and secure new clients.

  • Actively manage sales pipeline.

  • Establish new, and maintain strong current client relationships.

  • Create and deliver presentations; effectively and professionally communicating verbal and written material to individual customers and in large groups.

  • Extensive and varied interaction with ownership towards building the company.

  • Answer the phone and e-mail, enter data into the Order and Dispatch system and perform other office functions as needed to complete your own duties and contribute to the smooth running of the office.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities within tight timelines, demonstrating a stellar work ethic with a sense of responsibility and passion for the highest quality of work possible.

  • Professional, confident and service-oriented in nature with a sales centric approach to all business opportunities.

  • Strong computer skills using various systems for order entry and customer management. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook). Willingness to learn new systems and take the lead on optimizing the system for business development purposes.

  • A demonstrated track record of meeting and exceeding sales quotas on a regular basis.

  • A knowledge of the trucking/transportation business or a plan for acquiring this knowledge quickly.

Other skills that would be essential to long term success in this position can be learned on the job.  They would include:

  • An understanding of Federal Motor Carrier Safety regulations, especially regarding hours of service for drivers and safe operating standards for trucks.

  • The ability to read and interpret GPS generated maps giving drive times and routes.


  • A four (4) year college degree in marketing or equivalent with relevant post education experience OR

  • More than five (5) years of experience in a business development role with demonstrated results.

The employee must be able to speak and write clearly and fluently in English to be able to interact with the customers and employees.  Mathematic skills would include the ability to add, multiply and divide numbers with up to 2 decimal places using a calculator or computer program and to understand the mathematical concepts of costing in order to quickly provide estimates or verify computer calculated results.
